Grain Marketing & Strategies
At Bunkers Feed & Supply, we offer a variety of grain marketing tools to help you manage risk, capture opportunities, and meet your cash flow needs. Here’s an overview of the most common options, along with examples of how each one might work on your farm:
-
Sell your grain at today’s posted price and receive immediate payment.
Example: You haul in corn at harvest when prices are $4.75/bu and get paid right away.
-
Sell your grain now, but delay payment until a later date for tax or cash flow purposes.
Example: You sell soybeans in November but request payment in January to shift income into the new tax year.
-
Lock in today’s price for delivery up to 18 months in the future. Payment is made when you deliver the grain.
Example: In March, you forward contract corn at $5.10/bu for delivery at harvest in October.
-
Choose the price you want for your grain. If the market reaches that level, your grain is automatically sold.
Example: You set a target of $13.25/bu for soybeans. When the posted price hits that level, your contract executes.
-
Store grain with us and sell later when prices improve. Storage charges apply.
Example: You store corn at harvest instead of selling at $4.50/bu and later sell in March at $5.00/bu.
-
Deliver your grain now, but set the sale price later when you think the market is stronger.
Example: You deliver soybeans in October but set the price in December if the market rallies.
-
Set the basis (difference between local cash and Chicago futures prices) now, and choose when to set the futures price later.
Example: You lock in a -25¢ basis on corn now but wait to set the futures price until summer when you believe futures may rally.
-
Guarantee yourself a floor price but still capture upside if the market climbs.
Example: You lock in a $5.00 minimum on corn, but if prices rise to $5.50, you receive the extra 50¢.
Grain Facilities
Our grain facilities feature expanding storage capacity available for corn, soybeans, and oats, with bins rentable on a daily basis. We’ve also upgraded our dryer systems to handle wet grain quickly and efficiently at harvest.
Every load is weighed on our electronic scale and sampled for grading while still on the truck, ensuring accuracy and efficiency. With this system in place, you can count on being “in and out” of BF&S fast — even during the busiest harvest days.
